This HO scale ACF Centerflow has pretty much been the test model for some of mt latest rust techniques, using a medium called GOUACHE. The two that I am using here are Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna. The stuff is great! To get some good textures effects, I use AIM's weathering powders, and mix them together with the Gouache , and dab the surface with a small sponge.

This Proto 2000 CB&Q gondola will become a display for a local hobby shop, promoting the use of AIM weathering powders.

AIM Liquid's used: Real Rust, Real Rust Dark and
Grungy Grimey Black.
Other effects include Oil paint, Water Colors, and
AIM's weathering powders.

Here is my very first O scale centerflow hopper that I did for a fellow model railroader. He asked me if I had ever done up a car in O scale? Nope, I replied, but I thought it could be interesting. This model is from Weaver. With the larger cars, your weathering skills can really be seen, so you have to really be precise in your brush work and rust detail. This to me a was a nice challenge.
At this point, most of the cars I chose to do were lighter in color because it was easier to do a good rust, but fear no more, I have figured out my rust technique for darker colored cars.

Kadee # 58's

I don't really do graffiti cars, so I decided to give it a try. This car also has some custom tagging that I did myself. You can say that the tagging is authentic do to the fact that I used to hang out with alot of taggers back in the day, but never vandalized anything. I kept a sketch book that I would practice in for fun and learned various writing styles from them.

I came up with a techique using a few droplets of Testors Clear Parts & Window Maker Cement onto the car where I wanted pitted rust to be, then quickly before it dried, I
dabbed the wet spots with a dry brush filled with a mixture of my rust colored weathering powder. My Milwaukee Road boxcar below also has some great examples of this technique.

When you check this boxcar's roof out, be sure to check out the little white stones sitting up top. I added them as an extra detail, indicating kids may have thrown rocks at the boxcar. Also, the pitted rust at the top end of the car
came out very realistic. I never limit myself to just the polly scale paints or weathering powders. I experiment with a combination of oil paints, acrylics and watercolors too.

I have to mention that rusting orange boxcars used to be a bit challenging. When I was weathering up a car of this color, I would dirty it up more so than rusting it. Now, If I choose to add rust, I pick a darker colored powder to create a better contrast against the boxcar.

People always ask me if I weather my rolling stock from a prototype. I have yet to copy a boxcar exactly and have not really seen one that has all the combinations of rust and water streaks that I enjoy, all on one car. It can be looked at as fantasy weathering. I plan to get out there and railfan so I can get some nice pics, but where I live, it is pretty hard to get close up and get some nice shots. I rely on www.rr-fallen flags.org or www.railpictures.net I will eventually have a prototype gallery of my own on this site. Athearn Genesis HO Scale

This was kind of a turning point for me in creating my own style. There are alot of weathering guys out there, and so you have to be unique. Guys like Mellow Mike, Mr Kluke, Hatcrkrwy and Mike Conafalone are some of the best. Believe me, they will keep you on your toes. I have to thank Mark at AIM Products for introducing me to their
wonderful selection of powders and washes. My turning points really became abundant after using his products.

As soon as I received my powders and washes from AIM, I did this RAILBOX car for them. The powders have an adhesive base, so you can dullcoat your car if you like, but it's not needed. Forget CHALK, Adhesive Weathering Powders is the way to go. AIM Products.
